Official Newsletter of the Independent University
Alumni Association at Lowell, Inc. |
The Original Independent Alumni Association serving the Lowell college students with scholarships and grants continuously since 1948.
Hello Fellow Alumni,
Last year you learned that the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell was working toward better communications with you and the community in general. You will see in the Alumni Association’s President’s letter that our small steps forward are now big steps forward.
As the Association’s name says, we are independent and not part of the university. In the past, this has presented a stumbling block in communicating with all the students and departments of the Lowell campus. We have just recently been able to move toward a more cooperative relationship with the University. Going forward, the University will be helping us get the word out to the students and departments that the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell is here to help. Rest assured that this will in no way change how your financial contributions to the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell are used.
Remember, we do not use paid solicitors to call you. We will only call you if you have a question and need an answer about the Alumni Association. The Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell is a volunteer organization with a staff of only one and a quarter paid employees. Because of this tight control over our finances, you can be assured that 80%, or more, of your donations go DIRECTLY to the students on the Lowell campus in the form of scholarships and grants.
This past January saw the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell present another near record breaking amount in scholarships and grants to the students and organizations on the Lowell campus of UMass Lowell. More details can be found in the latest issue of the Spanner and on our web site, www.IUAAL.org.
This continues to happen because of your support. Unfortunately the cost of books, tuition, living quarters, and transportation are still going up for the students, so we have to continue to seek your financial support.
We know that if everyone reading this letter makes a donation, or renews their membership in the Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell, we will be able to financially help the Lowell campus students.
Feel free to contact us with any questions you might have concerning the Association.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,

John J. Carter, ‘58

Dear Friend of The INDEPENDENT UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
at LOWELL:
As a member of The INDEPENDENT UNIVERSITY
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION at LOWELL you have an opportunity
to serve your Association as a Director, or a member
of the Nominating Committee. The Directors and Officers
of the Association play an important part in the Association's
activities and represent the membership-at-large in
formulating future plans. The hard-working efforts of
each individual board member result in a strong and
prosperous Alumni Association, which can better serve
our Alma Mater.
The Nominating Committee prepares a
slate of nominees and the Alumni Association positions
are filled and take effect at the Annual Meeting. You
are urged to consider serving in one of the above mentioned
positions. This is a great way to meet new people and
to continue to support the high quality education that
we all received.
The committee welcomes the chance to
consider candidates for election. There are about six
to eight regular meetings a year. Four Directors, and
two members of the Nominating Committee are to be elected
annually. We hope to maintain a board membership that
reflects a cross-section of the membership - recent
graduates as well as graduates from all the former institutions
that are now part of The INDEPENDENT UNIVERSITY ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION at LOWELL.
To be eligible to become a board member,
dues of $35 must be paid to the Alumni Association between
July and March. The primary requirements for serving
are the willingness to participate and to attend board
meetings.
INDEPENDENT UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION at LOWELL
is an independent non-profit organization working to
advance the interest and prestige of the students, faculty,
administration, trusties, and alumni of the University.
The IUAAL is governed by a Board of Directors which
includes four officers, the past president and 12 directors
elected by members.
